Urban tenancy*
It consists in establishing a contract by which a landlord/lady lets a tenant live on his/her property in exchange for previously agreed-upon renewal and maintenance work the premises may require. The duration of the contract, somewhere between 5 and 20 years and sometimes even more, is established by assessing the costs of the renewal and maintenance work. This type of contract is an application of the principals of traditional tenant farming in Cataluña, by which "masoveros" (tenants) took care of the "masía" (farm building) and its fields in exchange for living quarters and part of the farm's production for their own consumption [*Hence the literal translation from Catalan of the term "masovería urbana" as recently coined by authorities in that region].
